EarthLink passes the 100,000-member mark and relocates from
Los Angeles to Pasadena, in anticipation of adding 300 new staff
positions. EarthLink launches the Internet's largest interactive
game environment, The Arena.

AskJeeves was incorporated. The corporate goal was to "humanize
the Internet by making it easier and more intuitive for
consumers to find the information, products and services they
need, and for companies to better acquire, retain and maximize
the value of their online customers."
July
David Gedye, along with Craig Kasnoff, conceived the idea for
SETI@home and formed the initial project team. A scientific plan
was developed that received widespread academic support at the 5th
International Conference in Bioastronomy.
Cascading Style Sheet specification CSS1 published. By
allowing the separation of structure and presentation, style
sheets make site management easier and promote Web
accessibility.
