XML 1.0 Recommendation published.

The National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) established. Located in the FBI's headquarters building in Washington, D.C., the NIPC brings together representatives from U.S. government agencies, state and local governments, and the private sector in a partnership to protect our nation's critical infrastructures.

In support of Presidential Decision Directive 63 , FedCIRC is created to provide a central focal point for incident reporting, handling, prevention and recognition. The purpose is to ensure the government has critical services available in order to withstand or quickly recover from attacks against its information resources.

PDD-63 established the position of National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Counter Terrorism.
